OrangeMetalGuy Posted June 21, 2024 Posted June 21, 2024 I need to do a cosmetic refresh on my 712H. In the past I have used painters tape to mask tires but that's a pain since of course it's not curved. What other methods are people using currently? I've considered playing cards; will just letting the air out relax the sidewall enough for me to shove the cards in? Thanks for your advice. Quote
SmilinSam Posted June 21, 2024 Posted June 21, 2024 (edited) I clean the tire & wheel good with dawn dish soap & water , then let dry thoroughly. The get the good duck tape brand duct tape. The kind that sticks good. Using one finger on one hand to press the edge of the duct tape in against the tire at/under the edge of the rim and the other hand to hold in unroll the tape, I just go all the way around the tire under the edge of the rim. Where you have been the tape will basically be standing straight up on edge. When you get around to where you started you just overlap an inch or so and then carefully tear the tape off. Then put a clean sheet of cardboard on the ground with the tire/wheel on it( taped side up of course). Then get your spray can out and carefully spray the wheel taking care not to get your spray over the tape onto the tire. Sometimes its easier to just stand the tire upright like it would sit on the tractor and just roll it with one hand while spraying with the other. This way the can will be right side up while you are spraying. Take care to keep moving and dont get the coats too heavy so you dont have any runs. Pull the tape, flip the tire and tape the other side and paint it. Been doing it this way for years. Rarely get overspray on the tire. If I slip and get some on the tire I keep a rag with some paint thinner on it to wipe it off before it has any time to dry. Edited June 21, 2024 by SmilinSam 3 Quote
Bill725 Posted June 21, 2024 Posted June 21, 2024 I use overlapping recipe cards tucked between the tire and wheel. 1 Quote

ParkerBarker Posted June 25, 2024 Posted June 25, 2024 3x5 cards from dollar store, release enough air to insert overlapping cards, works great Quote
