acken Posted June 28, 2024 Posted June 28, 2024 916 sheet metal, I wanted the old school round headlights. Kohler Command 18 HP. Front axle from older MTD rear steer riding lawn mower. Second right angle gearbox installed behind BGB. Belt drive to front axle. Will accept front factory front, and rear attachments, but no room for mower deck. Tires are Firestone style knockoffs, rims made from blanks, scratch built centers. Rear axle shaft from B series. Currently looks like will only make one show this year, Elmwood, WI, July 12-13. 9
GregB Posted June 28, 2024 Posted June 28, 2024 Looks great from the top and outside, what about some pics of the mechanical bits and pieces? OR are those considered "trade secrets" 😁
acken Posted June 28, 2024 Author Posted June 28, 2024 These show a little more. I thought I had some pics with the left wheel off. Sprocket on axle goes through countershaft to increase speed to extra gearbox. From there belt drive front axle just under chassis. 5
gwiseman Posted June 28, 2024 Posted June 28, 2024 Not bringing to Orange Spectacular? As always, nice work Ken!
Chris727 Posted June 29, 2024 Posted June 29, 2024 Impressive work as always Ken!!! Looks like it could have come from the factory.
s_stephen Posted June 29, 2024 Posted June 29, 2024 great work. how did you mount the front axle? looks like its in the original axle mount. 1
acken Posted June 30, 2024 Author Posted June 30, 2024 (edited) The front axle is attached to original support, but set back a little. I also had to weld a piece to lower axle pivot a couple of inches to fit pumpkin of differential under belly. This wheelbase has been shortened a couple of inches. The rear support of original axle had to be removed, and a new one put in its place. The tube seen in the foreground of pic protects the linear actuator that engages/disengages front wheel drive. Toggle switch is mounted in the hole in left side of dash. I did get a chance to test it a bit today by jacking the rear end up with a floor jack and dragging it around with just the front axle pulling it. Working my way up to a tougher test. Each time I do one of these custom projects I say it's my last! Edited June 30, 2024 by acken 8
acken Posted November 8, 2024 Author Posted November 8, 2024 (edited) Thanks Gene, it was a fun project that also challenged me a bit. I would like to give some due credit to Heidi and Dave at Old Allis News. They make sure to include a wide variety of topics in the magazine. I have been a subscriber for many years and only have one complaint, it never has enough pages. Edited November 8, 2024 by acken 5
Brettw Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 You have quite the talent, Ken. Impeccable workmanship, attention to detail and obvious patience. Quite an impressive build, Sir!
