jlasater Posted July 21, 2024 Posted July 21, 2024 (edited) I acquired a Grasshopper 614 for dirt cheap. Mechanically and cosmetically it's in great shape...except the engine. It was upgraded to an 18HP BS Vanguard at some point in its life (originally it was a 14). Well that engine age itself while the previous owner had it. Broken rod, destroyed the inside of the engine. I happened to have another identical engine in storage, thinking it was in good shape. Well...turns out it's in even worse shape. Broken rod, broken camshaft in half, rod chewed up the crank. So...not having much experience with BS v twins (I have had only Simplicity tractors to this point), have you guys ever used new shortblocks from Briggs and Stratton? A new complete engine is bumping $2k and I really don't want to spend that much. Or...I'd be interested in a known-good runner engine at a reasonable price. Edited July 21, 2024 by jlasater Quote
Chris727 Posted July 22, 2024 Posted July 22, 2024 Short blocks are a good option if they are available. Sometimes NOS ones show up on eBay. Quote
jlasater Posted July 22, 2024 Author Posted July 22, 2024 One vendor said they were backordered until mid October. I'm still hopeful though. Quote
Brettw Posted July 22, 2024 Posted July 22, 2024 I tend to look on Craig's and often find a Yard king, or Murray or some other stamped steel junk with a good engine. Sometimes $2-400 ish can get you a running engine, maybe a few good parts (tires, seat, steering wheel, pulleys, etc.) and when it's all done and said for $15-20 bux at the scrap yard. 4 Quote
jlasater Posted July 23, 2024 Author Posted July 23, 2024 I've been scouring everything. Found a 16HP low hour Vanguard. Stock engine was a 14, someone upgraded to an 18HP. I think I'm going to get the 16HP because shortblocks are NA until October. Do you guys know if the oil filter boss and oil cooler that was available for the 18-23HP Vanguards will fit on a 16HP? I want to do everything I can to help the engine to live a long life. Quote
