I acquired a B-110 recently from a neighbor's estate sale.  Last time I saw it running was maybe 5 years ago.  I'm going through it to bring it back to life.

I'm really a Wheel Horse guy, having a 14-8 and a C-195, so I'm not very familiar with Allis-Chalmers equipment, or the old B&S engine.  I've run across a couple of references to this forum as being a good one to get questions answered, so here I am.

I've installed a new speak plug and cleaned the points - this got the engine to fire on a huff of carb cleaner.  Next up was pulling the gas line and tank for cleaning.  The line will be replaced and the tank was very clean.  I put a new shut off valve 'cause the original didn't have a handle.  The battery and gas tank bay have been wire brushed and repainted.

Since the gas tank was so clean, I am optimistic that the carb will be as well. I'll find out in the next few days.

First question: I have the engine model number, but can't make out the type number and code.  Does anyone here have that information?

Thanks

I'll post pictures when I get that part of this forum figured out.

Welcome aboard! A B-110 is a great machine. The type number is 0123-01 If I remember correctly. The code is typically unique to all of the engines of that series built that day with those attributes, on that particular assembly line. The first two digits would begin with the year produced which would likely be 67 or 68.

Looking forward to pictures of your tractor!

Welcome to the club.

Dad bought an "early" (push button start) B-110 in the spring of 1968.  I still have it after a 15 year or so ownership by my neighbor.  A pic of when it returned in 2004:

I've scanned and uploaded the original operators and engine manuals;  pics of their "covers":  B110OpManualCover.thumb.JPG.d20387e4752c85a06da548848c88e0dd.JPG

At the top of the engine pic, you can see the engine code @Chris727 mentioned in this post above; the engine was built on Oct 11,1967; his memory is also correct as to the type number.

If you become a paying member of the club ($10) you get access to the Downloads forum where there's lots of good info about these old tractors including the service and repair manual for the B series tractors.

One of our  resident Wheel Horse guys is @Bill725.  He's building a special one:

Thanks for the information.

Next question:  'push button start' - I assume that is a term for the B-110 that I have.  It has an ammeter, a key switch that grounds out the mag., and a big heavy duty push button that makes the starter go.

@PhanDad - I am familiar with the Hot Rod Tractor thread on the other forum.

As promised, some pictures of the tractor:

I'm scratching my head over the steering column 'repair' a previous owner made.  Can anybody shed some light as to what might be going on there?

The neoprene bushing in the column probably went bad or fell down the shaft causing the column to wiggle. They likely did this to keep it from wobbling. The tractor looks like it will clean up well. The muffler is original ( but extension) is not.

Got the gas tank, new gas line, and new battery into the tractor today.  I poured about an inch of gas into the tank, made sure the tractor was in neutral opened the gas tank valve, set the throttle and choke, turned the key to on, and hit the starter button.  It cranked over 6 or 8 times then fired right up.

I drove it around the yard, tried out all of the gears, and pushed a bit of dirt with the dozer blade.  It made a cloud of smoke on start up, then cleaned up as it warmed up.  The ammeter indicated that the battery was charging.  It was making a puff of smoke when the throttle was opened, or when the governor kicked in and it was backfiring through the muffler when throttled down.  I'm thinking that the carb is not quite right.

Lots of improvements to get done on this machine - a bath, lubrication, figure out the steering column 'repair', paint the wheels (I'm thinking bright white),  check/change fluids, new gas cap/gage, and add a starter solenoid add  a safety switch requiring the brake pedal to be depressed before it will crank.  Also need to take a look at the mid PTO.  A flange on the small step of the PTO pulley is broken and though the shaft turns freely, it feels very rough.

The transmission did not always go easily into gear and the clutch engagement is grabby.  I'll need to look at the clutch/brake adjustment soon as well.

I  did discover that this tractor seems to want to keep the tools I'm working on it with.  It snatched the 7/16 socket off of my ratchet after I tightened each gas tank strap, and it pulled my 1/2 combo wrench into the dash tower when it slipped out of my fingers when tightening the battery terminal.

Got to do something about that extension on the muffler.  Just by eyeball, it looks like removing the extension will put the exit to the muffler uncomfortably close to the carb.  Anybody out there running a Jim Kemp stack on these machines?

Looks like this one is well on its way back to work.

Original pointed the muffler outlet forward away from carb. In the process of ordering Supertrapp parts, adapter, resonator and discs to try their 5S muffler. Report later.

Just a reminder to check the oil level in both the bevel gear box and transmission. The grease fitting on the mid PTO is often forgotten.

I got one of our storage sheds rearranged today, so the B-110 is now out of the weather.

We'vs just finished building a deck and had a small pile of topsoil that needed to be spread around.  The B-110 did the job.   Kind of missed the low range that my Red tractor has, though.

It does smoke under load - grey smoke.  I'm thinking rings or valve guides now.

Today's question:  What should I expect for a compression reading on this?

My recently rebuilt 10HP and NOS 16HP have 90 PSI.

If you plan to rebuild the engine, start locating rebuild parts as they are becoming harder to find, especially the undersize connecting rod. A machine shop can weld the crank journal and grind to standard size.

Please post pictures of your Supertrapp setup when you get it installed.

I was talking about this tractor with my neighbor yesterday.  I mentioned that it smoked under load and asked him if there was a local shop that worked on small engines, as I might be looking to have this one bored.  He replies that he probably has the proper size boring bar and could get it done - said it would be a good winter project.

Looks like I should start looking for pieces parts and make plans to pull the head to look at the bore and valve condition.  Should pay dues here so I could download the proper service manual, too.
