Brettw Posted August 14, 2024 Posted August 14, 2024 So, I picked up a M20 at an online auction. Took a gamble and sort of lost. It turns over, it has spark on both sides, it even produced air blowing out of the spark plug holes, so I knew the pistons are moving. But no firing. So, I pulled the heads, pistons moving fine, no valve movement. Although I haven't opened it up just yet, I would bet daisies to doughnuts the camshaft is gone. A quick look for a camshaft on line, and what turns up? This article from 12 years ago! Boy, have I learned a lot since then. But quite a fun read and a nostalgic look into the past. Anyway, if any of you do have a blown Magnum and a camshaft survivor for a M20, please let me know. Although I haven't performed the open heart surgery yet, I'm sure I'm going to need one. 3 Quote
Bill725 Posted August 14, 2024 Posted August 14, 2024 The M20-49544 and the M18-24594 used by Simplicity use the same camshaft, P/N 82 755 13-S. Two on Ebay. https://www.ebay.com/itm/335508766512?_nkw=82+755+13&itmmeta=01J58HNY7SZYB9VW2D0R42DHQP&hash=item4e1de17f30:g:PXEAAOSww5dmqF04&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA8HoV3kP08IDx%2BKZ9MfhVJKlBLgylYKMQ--0AJ35R6y6tj8KUe9q3B9isDv0ZLXhS7IVsDfem%2BdJ2GS4q%2F3q3%2B1b2bSpudUNqJUNOEZgMwz2dV%2BLTIxJvzDTrTKa%2B3gWen5lQbJGHF%2BoIysqdY5Hfr%2FZ08CYx2fVcHAXNWAUO4pEAwDjPCIPCGsTxPkjmd9htPvKwZvoLZDtcTcxlD2mVnQyQafC%2BRmSwgONRyA9fDKSu2PBa7BR5sDwf8ND26s0axbsz%2BDxQxDqysg0UwVDV1pIzuMx6bG32ChoYVO87W0oAIfNiQNGd3biZoPuAsYb6SQ%3D%3D|tkp%3ABk9SR4Tk15GqZA https://www.ebay.com/itm/155782340414?_nkw=82+755+13&itmmeta=01J58HNY7SBDD5N66FNQCA2CQH&hash=item244559df3e:g:N00AAOSwt3ZlCbW6&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA0HoV3kP08IDx%2BKZ9MfhVJKmhMgFiYSziIhRy2HGtKhXgvda%2F9H7tya2RiA4jhNtDGdoEozi8i%2B668ndh7WzMXUTRycmIHvo4e%2BTlP7Y8zwq39Non5cLq3if%2FWIJzCvVjLL%2FHgn0MGpIe3YjlCCn5kRhKV2lYUbLj1%2Fg%2BY9Y%2FETJ58fpeH8RQikwpplAIC8TcB6GzEmrnLBvkFZfz7VL7oDAgos9uN2nI87v8aqQceTc%2FoUowfEkD0cv2enNcgxX4adySsGLPurzvdchbzjDw3Q4%3D|tkp%3ABk9SR4Tk15GqZA Quote
Brettw Posted August 16, 2024 Author Posted August 16, 2024 Well, as expected, a bad camshaft. Not broken, and not caused by a grenaded governor gear (although that gear is now damaged, and, I would not split one of these cases and not replace the governor gear anyway). This is the second M20 I have fixed over the years with teeth broken off of the camshaft, the last being in 2012 I would think per the link to the old article. Fortunately, the crank looks good, and the oil pump gear also looks unaffected. So, I need a gasket kit (18 bux, ebay) a set of rings (might as well while I'm at it, 70 bux, ebay) a camshaft ( 70 bux ebay), and a governor gear (28 bux ebay). I paid too much for a non runner, but placed my bid (bet) and didn't quite win. So all said and done I will have about $375.00 in this engine. Still worth it in my opinion. WOn't be happening for a while, too much going on to wrap up the summer, but at least I now know where I stand. 3 Quote
