Tarheel Posted August 27, 2024 Posted August 27, 2024 This is something I'm pretty sure I have mentioned at some point in another thread, But maybe adding a bit more clarity. A couple of days ago I tried to start my Sunstar with a 20 Magnum engine. It would only run fully choked and even then poorly. I shut it off and left it until last night. I got it into the shop and pulled the carb and found a large amount of "Fiber" in the fuel. The fiber being the same color as the pleated part of the filter. From the filter on is only Tygon fuel line. I ordered a pack of ten of this type filter (Though I'm thinking that this filter came with a new carb and wasn't one of those) All of the filters in question have a magnet in them. I want to cut this one apart and see if the element breaks down into fibers. I'll post what I find. For now I have one of the small red B&S type filters installed. Anyone know of anything better ? Thanks Quote
PhanDad Posted August 27, 2024 Posted August 27, 2024 i think a filter installed "backwards" will shed fibers downstream. Quote

I've never had a filter shed like that, and I've been through many, MANY cheapo filters. My standard operating procedure is if I buy something, I add an inline filter and if I touch the fuel lines for any reason, I replace the inline filter. I did accidentally install one backwards once and had flooding issues, after which I found fibers just like you described in the bowl. Quote
Tarheel Posted August 27, 2024 Author Posted August 27, 2024 I'm sure that both of you are right. I'll have to take my strong reading glasses out there and see. Thanks. Quote
GregB Posted August 27, 2024 Posted August 27, 2024 And on pleated filters, pretty sure there are two main types. One for gravity flow systems and one for pressurized systems. Quote
Tarheel Posted August 27, 2024 Author Posted August 27, 2024 Just now, GregB said: And on pleated filters, pretty sure there are two main types. I did recall that the trouble I had before was on "Spooky" the Agco 516H. The problem ended up being the steel cross over tube that had rust in it and not the filters. So maybe this is just a problem with the filter that shipped with a carb ? 1 Quote
