Rear axle/Differential

So my rubber rear differential seal is toast (2121190sm) I have sourced a NOS one.

The question is... it looks like the gap between the differential housing and the wheel hub collar (for lack of a better term) is too wide. The seal was bound up between the diff cover and the wheel hub collar.

I have not seen any other actual differential pictures, and the parts manual isn't too clear as to clearances between the two.

See pic Diff 2.

I slid the wheel hub off, and I found it assembled as seen in pic DIF 1.  I'm not sure if that washer needs / has to be there?

Lastly, I slid it back together without the washer and it looks acceptable, but again I'm not sure of the clearances.

See pic DIF 3.

As a side note I believe the diff has been apart before as the nuts are a little rounded.

Thanks in advance for any and all comments!!

There usually is a washer present. Is this a later model Sovereign?

Mark,

I moved your post to the TT forum where it will get more exposure.

When I acquired my 7016H, the differential dust seal was also messed up, here's the link to my post about it:

https://simpletractors.com/forums/topic/62541-differential-cover-dust-seal-updated/

Comparing my pics to yours, your gap with the washer looks large.  If the the differential was taken apart, maybe it was reassembled incorrectly.  Here's a link that shows the order of the washers in the differential:

https://simpletractors.com/forums/topic/66699-b110-differential/

Based on the above, the large washer should be there.

PS - While writing this response, I see that @Chris727 already found this post in the TTF before I could post this response.

Chris, this is a later model Sovereign. #1692143. I got it for a decent price but everything I look at has been monkeyed with. A bit discouraging. Guess I get to take this apart also.

Bill, thanks for moving this and thanks for the links . They clearly show my gap is way too wide.

It seems to me that hub gear is being stopped prematurely by something, why or by what I have no idea.

I'm still waiting on some parts to finish the clutch project.

I think I'll head to the cabin in northern Michigan for the holiday weekend and come back refreshed and start work on that differential.

So I decided to tap on the gear hub and it moves in enough so that I only have about a 1/4 inch gap between the diff housing and the hub collar. I also noticed that the LEFT set collar has backed away from its original position. Could it be that the axle was just slopping back and forth causing the failure of that rubber seal? To me the gap now seems acceptable.

Maybe we'll have to move this post again to the tractor senior moment, forum?

With our pulling tractors I replace that washer with a thinner teflon type washer, so the sun gear engages the planetary gears deeper (more contact).

Thanks for the tip Mike !

Obviously the Teflon holds up well compared to the steel washer?
