valve and valve seat

Recommended Posts

I bought a 5216 for $50 the previous owner stuck to long of plug in. When I pulled the motor one valve seat came out with the valve as it opened. How can reinstall the seat and relap the valve by hand? Or any idea on how much it may cost to have repaired? 16hp twin B&S Thanks, Dave,

Depends on how much the block was worn by the loose valve seat. Usually, valve seats on aluminum block engines come loose if the engine has been overheated. A Briggs and Stratton repair manual will instruct you on staking a valve seat in place by using a punch to push the aluminum of the block up against the seat. If the engine was not run too long with the loose seat, you can reinstall the old seat. If the engine was run long enough to wear the mounting surface of the seat, you will have to disassemble the engine and take it to a machine shop. They will recut the block and install an oversized seat. Last time I had this done, it ran about $45. Pat
