AC 916 Leak

Mike, The leak your talking about is most probably coming from the bevel gear box not the hydro unit.It sounds like the PTO side seal on the bev box is bad,a not too bad repair. We do them right in the tractor,we just take off the PTO assy.and frame side plate to acess the seal. And while your at it check the bearing and shaft behind the leaking seal as it's probably worn. Also before taking anything apart, check the overall cond. of the bev. box by rocking the PTO clutch back and forth by hand checking for excessive end play in the gears. They should have no more than 1/8"-1/4" play, any more than that and the box needs rebuilding which is NOT a cheap repair. Good Luck! Dave C.

I am considering buying a 916, it has a hydro leak coming from behind the PTO clutch. Does anyone know what kind of repair this might require. Thank you as always for the valuable information.

Mike, The later models used hydro oil.You should have a square looking vent plug on top of the bevel gear box.Unscrew it and you should have a dipstick fastened to the plug. This way you can check to see what your type of oil is.So glad to be of assistance! dlc

I have checked the PTO for play and there is none, Thanks for the great advice. Is the bevel gear box filled with 90 Wt or hydro fluid?
