Had to do something to mark the season opener, and the Vols attempt to defend their National Championship, since I could only watch from a distance... I'll remove it before it gets annoying to others -- though never to me.

I'm really not a Volunteer alumni (Carson-Newman instead, 30 miles or so NE). However, my blood does run deep orange. I worked for UT's athletic department after high school, went there my freshman year (before changing majors and transferring to C-N) and the came back and worked there again after graduating C-N, this time in their publications department, while going to night school.

What can I say... Last year, UT #1 in NCAA Division I, with Carson-Newman #2 in NCAA Division II. This year, UT is #3 and Carson-Newman #2 at present....

Kent,

I live in Morristown, Tennessee. Glad to hear you have
a little bit of Southern blood in you.

Rocky Top is just fine. I'm a BSME from UT.

Sorry Kent, Nebraska is #1 this year. It takes a real football school to get back to back national championships!

Lightning doesnt strike twice you know.

I agree that it's very difficult to repeat. But, I take exception to the "real football" school remark --he's only the winningest Division 1 coach that's actively coaching -- that, and a national champtionship team that lost only 3 key players (though 8 were drafted....

He has the players, probably a better team overall than last year, if they can get enough lucky "bounces" -- and luck is ALWAYS a factor.

But, I'd still put money on Penn State, Michigan and FSU (among others) before I'd put it on Nebraska....

Les, no problem. I appreciate loyalty. I'm just a bit sensitive to the "respect" issue. Consistently fighting for the top of what is arguably the most competitive conference in college football today (SEC, especially the East) is challenge enough, but then getting national media recognition for it is even more difficult.

For example, UT will play 6 teams that were preseason top 25, 4 (if I'm not mistaken) on the road, and yet they won't be taken very seriously unless they "run the table" again.... BTW, the "battle of the Southland" is coming up in 2 weeks when #3 UT visits #4 Florida -- two teams that love to hate each other....

Enough football -- back to tractors....

True, luck has a lot to do with it. Back to back national championships have happened, what, 3 times in the last 30 years??? Well, its a fact that Nebraska did it twice. You should give us old Nebraska farmers a break, what else do we have to brag about??? Corn? Cattle? Hogs? Irrigation equipment? Football is all we got!
