716H Gear Box?

Hi,
The previous post was correct it is possible to rebuild it in the tractor. and it is about a 4 hr job in our shop. We usually take them out as it doesn't take much or any more time. Then you can wash it good and it is much easier to press in the needle brgs. and seals. We usually pull one [right on hydros] side plate off after splitting tractor. Check shafts for wear, if you can feel it with a finger nail or see it, it is bad. Replace the needle brgs as a matter of course, they aren't that expensive, much cheaper than buying them and a shaft later. Check the cross shaft for wear where the clutch pulley bearing rides. If it is rough replace shaft and clutch pulley brg, or you will be doing it over soon. The front needle is usually the first to show wear because it is so close to the ball bearing. I have to posts on june 17 and 18, that get into this also. If you get in there and need help, yell. Good luck,
Al

Sounds like the bevel gears are out. This nomally happens only on tiller tractors, the vibration from a lot of hard tilling causes the gears to wear out. I have heard of water getting into the boxes after tractors sit outside for years, which will tear up the gears also. Or it lost oil(80-90W) for some reason.

A good mechanic can change the gears with the box still on the tractor. The key is finding a good mechanic who knows what he is doing. The gears will cost close to $100 and labor??? I would guess three hours, maybe four. The other alternative would be to find a used box and replace it, not an easy job either.

About a year ago I purchased a 716H tractor.
I've had good luck with it till recently.
It appears that I've lost the input bearing to what I call the gear box. To explain myself better, it's
the unit which houses the PTO on one side and the drive pully for the cooling fan on the other side. How big of a job am I looking at to replace the input bearing on the shaft that connects to the output shaft of the motor. I need to complete this before ARCHERY season opens. Any ideas would be helpful.
