My wife was in a quilt shop in Souix City, IA and I found an AC 712 Shuttle for sale next door. I am now the proud owner of this tractor. My concerns are that it smokes and needs a new exhaust system from the engine out. Otherwise it is in good shape. Saw chrome molly rings advertised on eBay. Ad said that cylinder bore is not needed with this type of ring?? Is this a true statement?? Any help on locating parts for the exhaust would be appreciated. Since I am new to this club and finding the navigation of the site a little tricky, please email both to this club forum and my personal email at howlanddm@yahoo.com. Thanks a million!! Dan Howland

Hi and welcome Dan, if you are handy the K301 is a nice straightforward engine to work on. It would not be all that difficult to put new rings on. Since you would need to remove the rod, I would suggest pulling the head (inspect cylinder wall, piston and valves for wear, pitting, burn, scoring, clean carbon) measure the cylinder wall, see if it is within specs. If so, remove the rod, piston and replace with new std. rod, piston and rings..Foley-Belsaw has rebuild kits, mufflers and many other parts for the Kohler, Briggs, Tec engines, see link to get free catalogue. BTW, there are no rings that will correct a cylinder that is badly out of specs. Not saying yours is, it just may need new rings, that is why you will need to pull the head. Also, pick up a K-series service manual....Good luck Art http://www.foley-belsaw.com/freeWholesaleSmallEnginePartsCatalog.html

Dan, I would not recommend chrome rings. It is sometimes very difficult to get them to seat properly. They also have a tendency to wear the cylinders instead of the rings wearing. I think it is easier to replace the cast iron rings every few years instead of boring or replacing the engine because of the cylinder wear caused by the hard chrome rings. Rod H.

Dan, some tools you will need to do the job are: torque wrench measured with in. lbs. (for connecting rod bolts) Dial caliper, adjustable brake cylinder hone, (to rough up the cylinder wall for the rings), feeler guage, ring compressor, piston ring installer,......Art http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=2696 http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=5647 http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=40529 http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=43928 http://www.northerntool.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=200002087&prmenbr=6970 http://www.northerntool.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=200002090&prmenbr=6970
