Crankcase Breather

Just read in my Kohler Engines K-Series (for my K301) Single Cylinder Service Manual on page 4.2 that excessive oil use can be caused by "clogged or improperly assembled breather system" Since my engine has all the power it needs and runs good do you think its excessive oil consumption cold be caused by a breather problem vs. worn rings?? The original owner told me he kept it serviced regularly and only used to mow grass. I tried to search the archives but found no hits for "burning oil" or "breather" or "crankcase breather". "Serviced regularly" means different things to different people. The manual is a good starting point, but you have to use common sense too. Some people think changing oil and checking tire pressure is "servicing". The tractor I use for mowing grass gets the air cleaner serviced every hour, and oil changed after every use. My other tractors get the oil changed 2 times per year. I only "full service" my tractors once per year, but that takes at least one full day per machine.

WOW!! What a great answer. I will let you all know what condition I find my crankcase breather in. I can sure see why you would not want to re-write the answer to this question. Thanks - - Dan www.family-fishing.com
