KT17 - Magnum swap

I have a 7117 with a KT17, actually two, one with a bad motor, and the other will eventually go bad. I came across a good Magnum 18, model M18QS, spec 24665. Any chance I can get the magnum to work in the 7117 tractor?

Ken, I have a 1991 17GTH-L with the KT17 SeriesII which seems to be improved but I am planning ahead just in case. I dont think there is any major difference in the mounting between the two. I was thinking maybe the 20 or 25hp Magnum. the hydro will handle the extra power and what a hoss it would be! I too would like to hear any first hand experiences anyone may have. Larry

I'm not familiar enough with those engines to tell you the problems that you may run into. I have swapped several engines. Currently running a 14 Hp Kohler on my 61 Wards. Not bad considering it originally has a 7.25 Hp B/S. In the past, I also had a 10 Hp B/S and a 12 Hp Kohler from a Cub Cadet on that same machine. With a little work nearly any engine can be fitted.

Ken, I have a M20 that I drop in my 917 (using it as a pulling tractor) The M18 and M20 drop right in with NO modifications except that you must change ignition. The M18/M20 are electronic ignition while the KT17/KT19 are battery ignition. Otherwise they are physically the same engine. Your exhaust from your KT17 will bolt right on the M18. The KT19 and M20 are the same engines (longer stroke than the KT17/M18). Easy swap. If you need any more details let me know.

Ok, I guess I'm good to go. The motor is almost new, the gearbox on the tractor crapped out and the poor owner want's the useless hulk off his property.

Ken, I have a 1984 917 that I put a model M18S in. The only thing that I had to do was notch the frame where the oil filter goes, everything else fit right in. Good luck and happy holidays:)

Ken, I forgot. As Mike said, I also have cut the notch in the frame for the oil filter. But you could use a very short B&S filter (I did until I cut the frame) that will fit without notching the frame.
