Landlord throwing mower deck belt!

I've got a 1964 Landlord throwing it's mower deck belt! I'm new to all this tractor world, I just got this Simplicity. I don't really know if I'm engaging the the PTO right, is it at the right RPM? etc. Is the deck supposed to be UP OR DOWN when engaging the mower. Ya, I havn't got the owners manual, it's on order. That'll be a couple of weeks. This mower was parked for a couple of years, with that belt on. It's got a little twist in it, will that thro it off? Is their an adjustment for tension? HELP!!!!! TedB

Hi Ted, I have a 66/67 landlord - not sure just what might be different (I don't think much). I need to have my deck down to run it. Also, there should be a lever near the bottom of the transmission that is connected to the bottom of the PTO through spring. Pulling the lever toward the back of the tractor should tension the belt between the deck & PTO via the spring. Hope this makes some sense. Oh yeah, congratulations on the landlord, it's a great machine! John

I don't beleive your 64 landlord has the spring&lever that Ted refer's to but I could be wrong. You mentioned that your belt had a twist to it and if so you might have to replace it as some belts have a memory-such as a tire haveing a flat spot after setting for some time-You should always as Ted stated engage the belt with the mower down. You might have the belt on backwards so check to see with the tractor running and mower engaged-be careful while doing this-and see if air is coming out of the discharge shute. If not the belt is on backwards and needs to be twisted the other way on the mower deck pulley. Engine should be at least half speed when engageing deck. Let me know and I can send you a copy showing how the belt should run.->Best to you->happyjack<-

I wasn't going to mention this, but I know you won't tell any of the other guys... I swapped off my tiller and tossed on the mower on my 7119H a couple of months ago. Couldn't figure out why it wasn't cutting the grass.... Figured the grass was so dry and pathetic due to the dry spell.. The belt finally flipped off the cone clutch and jammed in the cone. Come to find out, I had put a half twist in the belt on the way up to the mower, so it was running backwards !!!!! Murphy's Law is alive and well in RI !!

Since you admitted it first... I did that "trick" too, just after I'd completely rebuilt my mower deck this spring. I was thinking "well over $100 in parts, and hours and hours of work, and it cuts worse than when I started." But, I looked at what it was doing to the grass and figured it out -- before it ate the belt. That's a different story, but maybe relevant to John's problem -- but I soon found out the hard way that a single V belt, either Gates or Simplicity, will not work very long on the old style "double pulleys." Sooner or later, it'll climb out of the "V" and get shredded by the sharp edge of these old cast iron pulleys. The side wall of the notch is not as tall between the two "V's," and the belt, correctly tensioned, will not stay in there if the lawn is full of bumps and valleys, which mine is. It'll climb out... The correct double-V belt (which ARE expensive -- which is why I tried the others), carefully installed with the twist the right way, now works like a champ.... You can bet though, that having paid that price for the belt, that I carefully checked all tension (including the PTO drive), clearances on the bails, retaining springs, etc. You certainly don't want to buy these things often... even though our friend Jeff gave me a VERY good deal on it. So, John if your deck has two "V's" on the center drive pulley and your center PTO has three -- two the same size and one smaller in diameter -- go to your "friendly Simplicity dealer" and order the correct double V belt. They may not have it in stock, but you'll be glad you went to the hassle and expense....

I had belt-throwing problems caused by two different things: 1/Pulley on top center of deck was chipped, so belt came off after the first revolution. Rather than spend $40 for a new pulley, I pulled it off the spindle and flipped it over, since the belt seemed to ride on the upper lip. It ran fine for several hours of cutting, then 2/started coming off again because I hadn't tightened the setscrews enough. (It was wobbling on the spindle, and throwing the belt.) Ten minute fix, and it's been fine for the past three months.
