Not knowing much about tractors I need to ask a question. My 1978 AC710 always has both rear wheels pulling. Is that normal? Can it be disengaged? Reason I ask is that I keep the tractor in my garage and turning it on pavement is a bear. Also leaves rubber marks on driveway. Thanks John

According to the Allis Chalmers Operator Manual for the AC710-6 Speed Tractor, the answer to your question is YES. They have what is commonly known as a locked rear end. In Chervolet it was called positraction and Ford called it equalock. (spelling may be wrong, can't say I ever saw either in print as High School kids talking about cars in the 50's) Welcome to the Club, John!! I know we will enjoy having you as a member and I am also sure you will enjoy all the info available lhere!! Dan

Sounds like your differential is shot. Both wheels are not supposed to be locked. I have had to replace/repair several differentials that have the problem you are describing. One wheel is supposed to "free-wheel" to some degree in a turn.

Agree with Sam. There is a planetary gearset at the end of the axel, between the axle and wheel. Actually the hub the wheel bolts onto is an intrgal part of the unit. Sounds like this is shot. Your little planetary gears are not turning inside. I have had the bolts break (that go through the shells that hold the gears in alignment) and do what you describe. Rebuilding one is pretty easy. Or, sell it to an Allis/Simplicity garden tractor puller "as is". That will save them having to "cheat" their rear ends. LOL
