richp
I would appreciate any advice for my B-212 with these (3) problems. (1) Variable speed chatter when I depress the clutch. The noise appears to be coming from the pulley area but I cant tell if it is the forks, belt or pulleys. No noise when tractor is pulling. (2) Bevel gear box play: Play appears to be interior rather than loose pulleys. How costly to rebuild or should I look for a salvage box? (3) Differential leaking small amount of gear oil while parked. Leak appears to be coming from center of housing. I plan to pressure wash to locate exact location. How expensive to replace gaskets and or seals or should I just find a drip pan? Thank you for any assistance that you can offer for my sick baby. Mike
Kenny, (1) The chatter or rattle could be the drive pulley rattling on the slide rods with no load on it. Or it could be the idler pulley and belt brake, but this would quiet down after the belt stop moving. This may be fixed by a careful adjustment of the variable speed system. This procedure is posted in the parts/manual section. But the drive pulley may still rattle some. (2) The bevel gear box is fixable (easier than finding one) the cost could be as high as $75 + if you must replace most parts. All parts are still available. (3) The differential mounted on the the right axle and has no oil in it, thus no gaskets. It should be packed with axle grease. Why it drips.????? Good Luck MikeES
Guest
As I remember belt "slap" is pretty normal for a variable and it will make some noise before coming to a full stop. Try putting it in a slower range before applying the clutch and it may stop quicker. Mike - what parts can you get for $75? Did you mean $175? Jacking up the rear and moving the axles up and down (using the tires for leverage) will help determine if the axle bearings have wear. Both the transfer case and trans are pretty hefty jobs. JP
Thanks for both replies. The chattering does not cease when tractor comes to a stop. It is constant when ever the clutch is depressed and will not cease until the pedal is released and tractor moving.
Kent
Kenny, Yes the bevel box will probably cost closer to the $175 than the $75 depending on whats wrong. My variable drive pulley rattles when the clutch is pushed in and has gotten worst after I totally dimantled the whole thing, cleaned it up and set up to factory specs. (The cleaning freed up the slide pins and this is what causes the rattle) MS
