Belt Shields on Mower?

I'm getting ready to rebuild a 48 inch mower for My AC 712 project. What I want to know is, do any of you guys run the mower without the belt shields in place? I don't have them, but based on other makes, I thought It would probably work fine without them. My other mower has the shields. I may make my own partial shields to protect operator's feet, but don't really see the need to completely cover the belt. Give me your opinions.

I have always taken them off my mowers. Easy to clean clippings off the top of the deck and they don`t rust like they do with the covers on. Ray

I would definately recommend partial covers at least. I made partial covers for mine, but they filled up with grass very quickly and were more of a nuisance in that respect. It is pretty easy to make full covers. I have made several. Pat

I won't run mine without the beit shields, for safety reasons and bacause it fills up with grass around the belt so fast when they are off...:)
