Dethatchers

Any of you guys use dethatchers? I borrowed a pull behind one the other day and it sure worked slick. I can't justify buying a new one for $80, when it's only two cheap plastic wheels a bar and some tines hanging down! Any one ever think of making some sort of custom bar to slide on a tiller to use as a dethatcher? You would probably need some wheels so you didn't cultivate the yard with it. Any thoughts on the subject??

Dethatching used to be one of my most distasteful jobs. Backbreaking work if done by hand. I’ve used those pull behind dethatchers and think they are about worthless. Since I got the following, dethatching is actually fun. In the spring I used the Revitalizer with a seed spreader hooked to it. I can dethatch, cut the ground, drop the seed, and cover the seed in one pass. One pass and I kick up wet leaves, thatch, mow the grass, and pick up all the debris.

That's the kind of setup I'm looking for!! Must be nice!!! I used the pull behind cheap kind and spent 2 hours afterwards with my leaf blower. It was one of those "What did I just get myself into" projects. I was thinking it would be the first and last time I do it. If anyone out there has any of these attachments and wants to get rid of it I'd be interested!! Thanks dutch!

I borrowed one of the cheapies from a guy at work & it didn't work half bad. can't see them lasting very long though. Anyone know of a decent brand for $150 or so?? I set up a little train behind my machine with the dethatcher & them my grass sweeper hooked behind that; worked pretty well. Next I'm looking for mulching blades for my machine. It's a Homelite AC Right hand discharge, does it use the same blades as the Simplicity LH discharge, or is the rotation opposite?? Dutch or Sam, can you help me out here?? Thanks::) Gary Hamilton

Gary, The blades are different for the RH and LH decks. Have you tried just blocking off the discharge opening to see how that mulches with OEM blades?

Textron makes the Ryan Mataway dethatcher - overseeder. It costs thousands, but many rental companies have them. They work the same as the Simplicity revitalizer...... Great. Well worth the less than $100 per day to rent one.

What exactly is that E-Z Rake?Well I guess I know what it is but how does it work?Is there some tines or brush like deal in there that spins? I have the Revitalizer and used it the first time last spring.I had no idea how to use it at first and the first section of lawn I did I didnt have to mowe the rest of the year LOL.If you dont like to mowe then just set the revitalizer on low.Works kinda like a tiller then.

The EZ Rake has a rotating shaft with 100 spring tines. Read about it here > http://www.simpletractors.com/attachments/front_end_thatcher.htm
