dlcentral 1 Posted November 8, 1999 Roy, just a thought... You assume the new tach is accurate. A simple check would be to check the RPM with a service Dept. tachometer, probably most any garage has one. It would only take a minute and verify your new tach readings. Like I said.... just a thought.
Guest Posted November 8, 1999 I attribute the fast idle to the governer. I discovered if I quickly rev the engine and backdown (ever ride a Harley?)it settles down. However when I press the hydrostat lever the idle creeps backup due to the governer.
Guest Posted November 8, 1999 Ford, I'm pretty sure the Tiny Tach is accurate. Maximum engine speed is 3570 rpm which is darn close to the recommended 3600 rpm. It takes a few seconds for the readout to stabilize but the tach works fine otherwise. Also, my calibrated ear and holding the throttle against the idle stop screw manually confirm the idle speed is too high. Roy
Guest Posted November 10, 1999 To All, I put a B & S Tiny Tach (P.N. 19389, digital tach/hourmeter) on my Sovereign today. Price was $42.95 and $45 at a couple of local dealers. I got mine for $40 tax included from a dealer with a Shaw-Duall I provided some information to (courtesty of members of this site). B & S estimates the battery life to be 7 years. The Tiny Tach would not fit the prepunched dash cutout but it was interesting to note Simplicity did provide for easy installation of their accessory hourmeter. The tach confirmed my suspicions the engine is idling tool fast. Minimum speed is in the 1800 to 2200 rpm range. The idle speed screw did not slow the idle as the governor or throttle cable is keeping the engine speed up. What is the procedure to adjust the governor and/or throttle cable to slow the idle speed?? Kohler recommends 1100 to 1200 rpm idle speed depending upon the application. Does Simplicity really want the engine to idle at 2000 rpm?? All now, Roy http://www.simpletractors.com/images/gallery_images/roy_pope/sovtach.jpg
