Hard Starting 3410???

Bunky

Recommended Posts

I have a 3410S It has been startign hard lately.. In order to get it to start I have to hold the Throttle shut and when it fires just barely let it open until it gets up and running... It seems to have plenty of Compression.. I think it is the throttle shaft sucking air.. Does anyone have any other idea's or suggestions.??????

Hi Bunky, if the battery and charging systems are good, the first thing I would do is take off the carb. bowl and see if there is dirt and sediment in there. Clean it out and try again.

Clean and adjust the points. .020 gap. or change the points out with a trigger module. Works every time for me. Been my experience you have to start the Briggs with no throttle, Kohlers start better with 1/4 to 1/2 throttle when cold. Brent

I had the same problem with my 9hp landlord 1)check clean (if ness.)adjust the points, 2) clean carb and check filter if equipped, 3)replace sparkplug with an ngk (not champion). This eng did what you described, had to hold throttle closed it was a real pain until I did those things that I mentioned. I never really found theproblem but I'm sure that it was a combo and it was gone afterwards. Good luck!:D8D

Here's the link to buy a trigger module from jacks last item on the page: http://www.jackssmallengines.com/ignition_b.cfm It replaces the points. No more adjustment necessary ever. Make sure you put the points clip back in and all screws or your points cover will fill with oil fast.

I wired mine using the points as the firing device. Prior to that the engine woud 'pop' on the exchaust strokes and hard to start. Since I wired it thru the points,it hasn't missed a lick for a good plus twelve years.

Haven't experienced that bob. Don't know what the advantage would be of having the module if you have to keep the points???? I remove the points, connect one wire (don't remember which color at the moment) to the the points wire and ground the other. Replace all screws to plug the oil leaks, keep the clip in place to hold the plunger rubber down, again to plug oil, and replace the cover. Wa-la. No mo' points to get oily and need cleaned or gap re-set. Works well. Brent
