Bevel Gearbox--Need some Expert Advice

Recommended Posts

I'm rebuilding the bevel gearbox on an early B10 ....new bearings, seals, and did something that now I wished I hadn't. I removed the retaining ring from the driver shaft, and now can't get the new replacement one back on. I'm afraid to force it, as I might bend it out of shape. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Is there a "special" Simplicity tool for this? Snap ring pliers just don't get it! Also--what is the recommended torque for the bolt that goes in the end of that shaft and retains the gear. Thanks , Dave

If I recall, you have to slide the ring down the (oiled) shaft. I rebuilt my BGB 7 years ago and thats what I thought I did. Bolt should be a grade 8 and 27 - 33 lbs torque.

I usually stick a small screwdriver in the snap ring slot to gently open it wide enough to slide down the shaft. Don't forget, the bolt that holds the drive gear to the shaft is special with a thin head.
