Broadmoor Engine Replacement

The engine just died in my 3 1/2 year old Simplicity Broadmoor Garden Tractor. It was warming up at idle about a minute after starting, when the engine went "clank", and went unbalanced. I shut it down immediately (Yes, it was full of oil). I think that a wrist pin or connecting rod went. Two mechanics have told me that it's an aluminum block engine, and not worth fixing. Sooo.... Can anybody suggest a source for a new engine (Briggs will not sell direct). It's a 16hp Vanguard Vtwin, Model 303777, Type 111-E1, Electric start. The local shops want $1,200.00 for the engine, and about $400.00 in labor. Yuk. Thanks! :(

Hi Ed, I have seen replacement engines on Ebay selling for much less than $1200. Check link for a possibility. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2318630316&category=20544

Check the links for some of the sponsors on this site. I know some of them sell motors. Sorry for the bad news and good luck getting it purring again.

Art, Do you think a 25 horse might be a little big for a Broadmoor? Hummmm - Well, it would be fun!!! Dan

Good question Dan, guess it depends on the size/footprint, mounting pattern and whether the shaft sizes are the same. The ELS engine is Premium Consumer, which is actually a downgrade, from the Vanguard, which is labeled top of the line Premium Commercial.

Before you get a replacement engine, I would suggest you determine what exactly went wrong with yours. It could be as simple as a piece of carbon or a valve problem. The only way to confirm is to perform a partial disassembly of the engine and see what's going on.

The problem with using an IC engine to replace a Vanguard is having to rig up exhaust, throttle linkage, etc. Also the Vanguard on my Broadmoor used a fuel pump, because the tank is under the seat. Not sure if the IC has one.

Jeez, sorry to hear that. Do you own any older simplicity's? I dislike my regent alot, noting but breakdowns, even the 1st year I had it. If you use it hard, you might just be better off with an old Soverign,....not being pushy...but for that much $$$ to buy a motor, you could get a nice used Soverign....best tractor Simplicity made. From my new Regent, I know 1 thing....no KOHLER ever AGIAN! Junk Junk Sorry for the rambling... -Good luck -BradW
