Armstrong "powermax" adjustment question

DOH! I went to adjust the drive belt tension on my Allis 620. The book said to tighten the large hex nut above the tension spring - seemed simple enough. It was really tight so I gave her a crank and it tightened (I thought) a little bit. Then I leaned in to it and POP - I twisted off the eyebolt that runs through the spring. DOH! I came to find out there are a couple of hex nuts that need to be loosened up first. The book said nothing about them. Is there a right way to make this adjustment? Steve

Steve, Been there, done that:I According to the operators manual (TP100-1369-01-PM-SA) the adjustment is 8" measured from the top of the casting surface to the top of the spring. Clutch is fully engaged (pedal out) position. When I adjusted mine, it was by trial and error. I'm thinking on mine I may drill a hole in the large nut and extend the threaded rod through it and install a jam nut on the outside where its easily accessible.(would this be considered hacking? ;))Later, Chad
