Delco Starter/generator voltage & current settings

Can anyone provide the correct voltage and current
settings for the Delco Remy generators/starters on my
B-1 and Cub Cadet?

I am having problems with the generators running too
hot and loading the engines down when they are at idle.
I suspect the cut-in voltage, cut-out voltage, maximum
voltage, and maximum current settings on the voltage
regulators are out of whack.

I also suspect the 2 coil regulators consist of a cut-out
relay and a current relay (e.g. no voltage relay/coil
to adjust).

None of my service manuals (Briggs & Stratton and Allis
Chalmers) list the specifications for adjustment of
the voltage regulators. My automotive Delco Remy manual
list specifications for car but I think the output
current and voltage settings for a car is too high
for the tractor starter/generators.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you,
Roy L. Pope

Roy, I personally don't know voltage/cutout settings but Stens 800-457-7444 has new regs delco#1118988 briggs#295924 for about $25. Or I have a good used one I could sell you cheap enough. e=mail:dlc@pioneeris.net Regards dlc

Roy, I have never had a regulator problem on any of the old tractors. I have even used a generic auto parts store 12 volt regulator. I also use the full sized 51 series car batteries like the old tractors originally came with. I don't know if the new small tractor batteries would cause a problem with the voltage settings or not, they must have less capacity. These old starter/generators were designed to charge a full sized battery. What type of battery are you using? The last 51 series battery I bought, I paid $54.95 + tax at Wall-Mart. I know those little garden tractor batteries sell for $19.95 to $29.95 at Wall-Mart but I don't use them. I may be totally in left field in respect to your problem but it's only an idea. Tim

Tim,

I have always used the small lawn tractor batteries from
Auto Zone or Advance Auto. Never had a problem until
now. But, since you mention it the problem did not start
until I started using the Advance Auto batteries in both
of my tractors.

Thanks,
Roy

Dic,

Thanks for the reply. I may take you up on the offer to
buy a new regulator. Will e-mail you if I decide to.

Thanks for the help.
Roy
