Welcome Doc, I would check the starter first. It may be loose or just worn out. If this motor is in a AC 616 or Simplicity 4040 then you will have to pull the motor out to get to it. Good luck.

I believe your right, May just be out of alignmnet to, I got this running for the first time yesterday, (wednesday) and the noise is only when you are tryng to start it. As a matter of fact the starter actually sticks once in a while. It is actually in a case 446, But i know they used them in the simplicity's and ac's. I was trying to get a 9020 or 720 but prices are to high. I got a good deal on this one, About the same size but no PTO:(

Doc, I have both the Case 446, and the 4040. The engines are actually different. The 4040 used a 16.5 CCKA engine, the Case has aa a B43M 16 horse engine. The starters are on opposite sides of the engine. From the drivers seat, the 4040 app. is on the bottom right, on the Case its' on the bottom left. My Case occasionally grinds when the gear on the starter doesn't engage the flywheel. If you remove the flashing on the left side of the engine, you can see the started gear, and it's shaft. Its a pretty simple operation. I lubricated mine, and it seems to work much better(lubed the shaft and gear, that is.) I haven't done it, but believe the starter will come off the Case with the engine in the tractor. Good luck, George H. Oh, the info on the tractor identification sticker for the case is Model BF MS/243 4c. Engine number 174749109.
